All about Murphy

There’s something just a little bit marvellous about Murphy. Once you get to know us, we’re sure you’ll think so too. So what are we really like? Below, you’ll find out all about our business: who we are, what we do, what we stand for.

Who we are

Murphy – or J. Murphy & Sons Limited, to give us our full name – was founded in 1951 by construction entrepreneur John Murphy. Almost 70 years later, Murphy is a leading engineering and construction company, working round the globe to deliver world-class infrastructure that improves lives.

What makes us different

There are lots of things. Our values. The exciting work we do. The bees we keep at our head office. But one key way we’re different is the way we do everything in house. What do we mean by that? Well, where other companies might plan a project then hire someone else’s builders, we have all the skilled colleagues we need to see our work through from start to finish.

After all, there are now more than 3,000 of us – engineers, professionals, and skilled operatives – at work across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada. And you might just be the next to join our family.

Diversity

Speaking of diversity, we’re all one family here – and that means we celebrate colleagues of all backgrounds and cultures. From a small family firm, we’re growing to become a global business that reflects our world - and as we grow, so do our employee support networks.

One example is Murphy Pride: whose goal is to raise the profile of LGBT+ issues, providing support, education, and helping colleagues better support each other. We even recently became one of the only construction and engineering firms to take part in Pride in London 2018, with a rainbow HGV in the parade.

Sustainability

As influencers in the construction and engineering industries, it’s our duty to make sure we go above and beyond in sustainable and eco-friendly processes, including:

  • Reducing carbon emissions
  • Creating new eco-systems for local wildlife projects
  • Sustainability training in Murphy
  • Providing sustainability education in schools
  • Fuel-saving new vehicles, plant and site power pods
  • Reducing environmental incidents

Corporate Social Responsibility

As a business and as individuals, we’re passionate about helping good causes and positively engage in grassroots activities to benefit the communities in which we work. Whether it's donating household items to local refuges, upcycling materials so that they can be used in schools, or donating materials for community use, we like to help.
Some of our most recent efforts include:

  • Helping to transforming an unused area of a zoo into an aviary which can now be enjoyed by over 80,000 visitors this year
  • Helping to facilitate the donation of an old NHS generator to the Freedom Foundation in Nigeria
  • We’ve become the first become the first construction company in the UK to use a cleaner burning diesel alternative

Our charity committee meets monthly and encourages employees to suggest local projects or charities they would like us to support. Our own employees' fundraising efforts are also eligible to receive a donation of up to £1000, subject to the approval of the local charity committee.
